CURRICULUM RESOURCES

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

This program was designed to build strengths, resilience, and coping skills among youth as a way of enhancing interpersonal functioning. Every aspect of the program, from the material presented to the relationships between facilitators and participants, is designed to model appropriate use of power and to support youth empowerment.

The Youth Relationships Program-After School (YRP-AS) applies the same core principles of skill building and awareness in a non-classroom setting. It can be implemented in schools that also offer the classroom-based curriculum, or as a stand-alone program in schools or community settings that do not offer other components. Ours is a proactive, competency-enhancement approach rather than a treatment.  This program was designed to build strengths, resilience, and coping skills among youth as a way of enhancing interpersonal functioning.  Every aspect of the program, from the material presented to the relationships among facilitators and participants, is designed to model appropriate use of power and respectful relationships, and support youth empowerment.

We applaud the efforts being made by schools and communities to promote healthy, nonviolent relationships during adolescence, and hope that you will find the enclosed materials to be a key component of a comprehensive strategy for your school or community. The information, strategies, and exercises described in this program are intended to benefit all adolescents and their support networks, not merely those who come to our attention due to problem behaviors. We attempt to add diversity to our exercises and examples throughout, and welcome any further suggestions from teachers and community partners using the program.

Intended Participants

This project targets the prevention of violence through the promotion of positive, healthy relationships. Our focus is on youth between 12-16 years old. We prefer not to select particular youth for the program, but rather to open the program to any interested youth regardless of whether or not he or she has been involved in a dating relationship.  Youth who are not yet dating will still be able to learn critical skills that will aid them in their future dating and peer relationships.

This minimal selection process serves two important functions:  First, an open-ended policy avoids the negative labeling that so often occurs when a youth is referred for services. Second, because the program is preventative in nature, we wish to reach youth before they have become involved in a violent relationship.  Although participants have generally been involved in some degree of relationship conflict and/or abuse, such behavior is by no means an inclusionary or an exclusionary requirement for participation.
