Although our Core Grade 9 Physical and Health Education program was developed specifically for mainstream grade 9 students in Ontario, educators in other school systems have expressed interest in using the curriculum. One system with unique needs is the Alternative Education School System. Students may enter alternative schools for a variety of reasons: attendance difficulties, school dislike, failing grades, significant behavioural problems, and expulsion.
During the pilot stage of teaching The Fourth R in alternative schools, the program did produce favourable outcomes. However, it was evident that the Fourth R should be revised to more adequately address students’ needs. We have recently developed the Alternative Education Program that caters specifically to the unique needs of students in this system and can be widely distributed in the Alterative Education System across Ontario.
TheFourth R core program has been adapted for students in the Alternative Education system to meet their diverse needs. Alternative Education Programs include a wide-range of schools and students who often have unique needs. The majority of students in these schools have engaged in the three risk behaviours that are addressed in our programs: Substance use, Unsafe sexual behaviour, and Violence / bullying.
