CURRICULUM RESOURCES

ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM

Although our Core Grade 9 Physical and Health Education program was developed specifically for mainstream grade 9 students in Ontario, educators in other school systems have expressed interest in using the curriculum. One system with unique needs is the Alternative Education School System. Students may enter alternative schools for a variety of reasons: attendance difficulties, school dislike, failing grades, significant behavioural problems, and expulsion.

During the pilot stage of teaching The Fourth R in alternative schools, the program did produce favourable outcomes. However, it was evident that the Fourth R should be revised to more adequately address students’ needs. We have recently developed the Alternative Education Program that caters specifically to the unique needs of students in this system and can be widely distributed in the Alterative Education System across Ontario.

TheFourth R core program has been adapted for students in the Alternative Education system to meet their diverse needs.

Alternative Education Programs include a wide-range of schools and students who often have unique needs. The majority of students in these schools have engaged in the three risk behaviours that are addressed in our programs: Substance use, Unsafe sexual behaviour, and Violence / bullying.

TESTIMONIALS

“The Fourth R curriculum for students in the Alternative Education has been developed particularly for at-risk adolescents.  It provides teachers with activities that help to meet a variety of learner needs and facilitate positive communication in the class.  Aboriginal Perspectives has been designed to meet the specific needs of Aboriginal youth in a way that is culturally appropriate. The students have reacted really positively to the Aboriginal content, and because of this, become very engaged in the program.  The lessons are very easy for teachers to use, allow for flexibility, and are relevant to different Aboriginal groups.  The response to this program by both the students at the community in general has been inspirational.”

Thames Valley District School Board

Alternative Educaton program builds on the core program by:

  • Adapting the core lessons so that they meet Ontario Secondary Curriculum Expectations across several subject areas as well as addressing the needs of mixed-grade classrooms

  • Adding lessons to address issues relevant to Alternative Education students (e.g., expanded lessons on drug use/abuse)

  • Enhancing role-play opportunities for additional skill-building

    · Adding booster lessons for transitory students

  • Teaching students basic coping skills using cognitive-behavioral strategies

  • Ensuring flexibility for non-traditional class times and delivery
