Fourth R Parent Webinar Series

Impact of Media Violence on Today's Youth: This webinar will define media violence, talk about how much youth use media, explore how media portrays violence, look at the messages that youth receive in media, and provide strategies, tips, and resources for adults to help youth be critical about the media they use and enjoy.

 

Cyber Bullying and Electronic Safety:  This presentation examines youth technology use, explores what cyber bullying is and warning signs that parents can watch for, and discusses youth “sexting.” The importance of monitoring children’s technology use is also identified. Parents are provided with a variety of strategies to prevent and respond to cyber bullying and sexting and keep their children safe in the digital world.


 

Mindfulness: This webinar addresses youth mental health, particularly causes, concerns, and prevalence. It will also discuss what it means to be emotionally healthy, review what gets in the way of good emotional health, and make the connection between developing healthy relationships and mental health. Finally, it will outline the benefits of incorporating mindfulness into the lives of youth to improve their mental health and wellbeing and provide strategies for parents and professionals to support youth with mental health concerns and issues.

Scholar's Choice Social Media Safety Zone

This webinar was presented by Ryan Broll and Shanna Burns. The topic was pointers to protect kids from digital dangers and focused on providing knowledge and know-how to keep kids free from cyber bullying, social media mishaps, and unintended online exposure. 


 

Ontario Teachers' Federation (OTF) Connects Webinars

Media Violence Webinar - Today’s students live in a world saturated in traditional and social media. Educators have the opportunity to help their students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate media environments with safety and respect. Presented by The University of Western Ontario, The Fourth R Project, CAMH Centre for Prevention Science, and supported by the Canadian Women’s Foundation, this session will discuss the importance of addressing media violence with students, present the current literature on this topic, provide a context for addressing media violence in the classroom, and introduce three new lessons geared to start the conversation about the representation of youth in media.

Digital Harassment, Social Networking, and Online Safety Webinar - The world our youth are living in is constantly changing, particularly with respect to socializing in their online worlds. This webinar will review how social networking and communication technologies are changing the way that youth communicate and build friendships/relationships. By examining how social networking tools are appropriately and inappropriately used by youth, we will look at how these technologies can lead to cyber bullying, digital harassment, and unsafe situations. Some possible consequences of engaging in these behaviours will be examined. In addition, we will discuss all the positive ways that social media can be used plus provide tips and tools to help monitor and protect youth as they navigate and socialize in their online world.

COMING SOON: Coming of Age in a Digital Era Webinar - Today’s youth are coming of age totally immersed in a world saturated with media and technology. This webinar examines representations of males and females in media and addresses what these images say about gender stereotypes and normative masculinity and femininity. Topics discussed include mixed media messages, violence in media, the hypersexualization of girls, and how social media is impacting on youth perceptions of what type of person they are supposed to be. It also looks at how youth are creating their own identities in their online worlds. Recommendations for building protective factors and positive media choices are provided.

 

Canadian Women's Foundation Webinar

Impact of Media Violence Webinar - Learn more about media literacy workshops on gender stereotypes with presenters Shanna Burns (CAMH) and Ray Hughes (National Education Coordinator, Fourth R). Shanna and Ray presented a three-lesson mini-unit on Gender Stereotypes in the Media developed for the Canadian Women’s Foundation to share with healthy relationship programs and organizations across Canada.
